Cockroaches aren’t just creepy—they’re a serious health concern. Cockroach allergens can trigger asthma attacks, cause allergic reactions, and contaminate your home long after the roaches are gone. Here are five effective tips to eliminate cockroach allergens from your home.
1. Deep Clean Your Kitchen
Cockroaches love kitchens because of food residue. Wipe down all surfaces, clean behind appliances, and don’t forget the grease buildup on your stove hood. Pay special attention to areas under the refrigerator and dishwasher where crumbs accumulate.
2. Vacuum Regularly with a HEPA Filter
Cockroach allergens settle into carpets, upholstery, and fabric. A vacuum with a HEPA filter captures these microscopic particles instead of spreading them back into the air. Vacuum at least twice a week, especially in bedrooms and living areas.
3. Wash Fabrics in Hot Water
Bedding, curtains, and stuffed animals can harbor cockroach allergens. Wash these items in hot water (at least 130°F) to kill allergens. If items can’t be washed, place them in a hot dryer for 30 minutes.
4. Seal Entry Points
Prevent future infestations by sealing cracks around pipes, windows, and doors. Cockroaches can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps. Use caulk for small cracks and steel wool for larger openings around pipes.
5. Call a Professional
If you’ve had a cockroach infestation, DIY cleaning may not be enough. Professional pest control treatments eliminate cockroaches at the source, and our team can advise on thorough allergen removal strategies.
